In Manila cityphilippines reputation as a forbidding city
for visitors stems partly from its size and apparent
disorder. The relentless growth of the conurbation has not
been helped by unchecked urban development and an influx of
provincianos looking for work, most of who live in shanties
on the periphery, encroaching on rainforest and paddy-
field. The main attractions are close to one another,
grouped mostly along the crescent sweep of Manila Bay and
Roxas Boulevard. For Budget visitors, they usually base
themselves in the enclave of Malate from where it's a
relatively short hop to Rizal Park and the old town of
Intramuros. Beyond Chinatown, the gargantuan Chinese
Cemetery is morbidly interesting, while the rather sterile
business districts of Makati and Ortigas are
best known for their malls and restaurants in cityphilippines.

heart of cityphilippines is a small crypt opposite the town
hall that houses the Cross of Magellan. A modern hollow
cross that is said to contain fragments of the original
brought by the famous conquistador in 1521 and used in the
first conversions of locals to Christianity. The big annual
attraction in Cebu cityphilippines is the Sinulog Festival,
which culminates on the third Sunday of January with a wild
mardi gras street parade and an outdoor concert at Fuente
Osmeņa. Climax of the festivities, The Sinulog Festival, in

Kadayawan, held during the third week of August, which gives
thanks for a bountiful harvest. One of Davao's festival's highlights is horsefighting and
